Telangana gram panchayat elections: Congress dominates phase-2, wins half sarpanch, ward member seats

Congress-backed candidates claimed victory in 27 districts except in Siddipet, Jangaon, Nirmal and Komarambheem Asifabad.

Hyderabad: Candidates backed by Congress won decisively in the second phase of gram panchayat elections, that were held on Sunday, December 14.

Congress-backed candidates won a majority in 27 districts except in Siddipet, Jangaon, Nirmal and Komarambheem Asifabad, tv9 telugu reported. BRS-backed candidates claimed victory Siddipet, Jangaon, Asifabad districts while BJP-backed candidates won in Nirmal.

Telangana Pradesh Congress Committee (TPCC) chief Mahesh Kumar Goud said that the results reflected people’s confidence in Congress governance.

“People have given a clear mandate to the slogan of welfare, social justice and development. The emphatic victory of Congress candidates in the sarpanch elections is a strong symbol of this,” he said.

How many seats did Congress win in phase two?

As per data available, Congress has clinched 2,297 seats, which is 51.9% of the vote while BRS won 1,191 seats. BJP won 257 seats and others, independents won 578 seats.

In phase one, the Congress had won 2,425 seats followed by BRS, BJP and others.

Rural voters come out in big numbers:

Despite the ongoing cold wave, voters in rural areas of Telangana have turned out in record numbers. About 85.86% voters have turned out in the second phase, which is 1.58% higher than phase one, which was held on December 11.

The second phase covered 4,333 sarpanch posts and 38,350 ward member posts. Out of these, 415 sarpanch posts and 8,307 ward member posts were decided unanimously.

The polls were held peacefully, barring a few stray incidents. Over 85 percent of eligible voters exercised their franchise, State Election Commission said.
