Telangana: IMD issues red alert for three districts for extremely heavy rain; moderate flash flood risk for six districts

Mulugu, Bhadradri Kothagudem and Mahabubabad districts of Telangana are on red alert for extremely heavy rainfall.

Extremely heavy rain is likely in Mulugu, Bhadradri Kothagudem and Mahabubabad districts of Telangana on  August 18 with the weather department issuing a red alert while very heavy rain is likely in Jayashankar Bhupalpally, India Meteorological Department said while issuing an orange alert.

Yellow alert is issued for Adilabad, Hanmakonda, Kamareddy, Khammam, Asifabad, Mancherial, Medak, Nirmal, Sangareddy, Suryapet, Vikarabad and Warangala districts on August 18, 19.

Similar weather conditions are likely to prevail over Mulugu, Bhupalpally, Bhadradri Kothagudem, Mahabubabad until August 20, the IMD said in its forecast. Heavy rain accompanied by gusty winds are likely to occur in all parts of Telangana over the next few days.

The IMD has also issued moderate flash flood risk over few watersheds and neighbourhoods in Jogulambad Gadwal, Mahabubnagar, Rangareddy, Sangareddy, Vikarabad and Wanaparthy districts.

Mulugu records 200 mm rainfall:

According to Telangana Development Planning Society data, Wargal, Gouraram in Siddipdet district recorded the highest rainfall of 235.8 mm followed by Islampur in Medak district. Meanwhile, Mangapet, Eturnagaram in Mulugu district recorded massive rains of 200 mm overnight and into the morning.

In Medak, Manjira river near the famous pilgrimage site of Edupayala Vanadurgamma Temple is flowing rapidly. Due to heavy rains and floods, the water level in the upstream Singur reservoir has increased. The authorities are releasing water from the project downstream.

North, Central and East Telangana are under alert for heavy rains over the next 12-18 hours, T Balaji, independent weather forecaster said.

Light rains are expected in Hyderabad through the day in some parts of the city with overcast conditions.

Well marked low pressure area over west central and adjoining northwest Bay of Bengal and north AP-south Odisha coasts.
