Former Special Intelligence Bureau (SIB) chief Prabhakar Rao, who is an accused in the phone-tapping case, surrendered before investigating officer ACP Venkatagiri on Supreme Court orders at Jubilee Hills Police station on Friday morning, tv9 telugu reported.
A bench comprising Justices B.V. Nagaratna and R. Mahadevan issued an order stating that the petitioner should not be subjected to any physical harm during the investigation. “Necessary medicines and food from home should be provided if requested,” the court said.
He has been questioned several times by the Special Investigation Team (SIT) and after Rao failed to cooperate with the SIT, the government has asked the apex court for custodial interrogation and has been granted the permit, tv9 telugu reported. He has been under interim protection granted by Supreme Court since May 29. He had moved the top court challenging the order of Telangana High Court, which dismissed his plea seeking anticipatory bail.
A suspended DSP of SIB was among four police officials who were arrested by Hyderabad Police since March 2024, for erasing intelligence information from various electronic gadgets as well as for alleged phone-tapping during the previous BRS government.
The accused are part of an alleged conspiracy in which they ‘misused’ the resources of SIB for political purposes by putting citizens from different walks of life under surveillance, police had said.
