Telangana Urban Local Body Polls to be held in February, cabinet decides
The cabinet has decided to hold elections for 116 municipalities and seven municipal corporations, where the term of the elected bodies was completed.
Hyderabad: Telangana state cabinet has given its nod for urban local body polls to be held in February. The cabinet has also approved the release of Rs 2,787 crore for land acquisition for Phase-2 (A) and Phase-2 (B) of Hyderabad Metro Rail.
The state cabinet meeting was held at the site of Sammakka Saralamma jaatara in Medaram, where CM Revanth Reddy reopened the renovated altars and temple premises. He then performed special prayers to the forest goddesses Sammakka and Saralamma along with his family.

"Considering that the Delimitation Commission has already submitted its report regarding the municipal elections, and the reservations have also been finalized, and also in view of the upcoming festivals of Ramzan and Shivaratri in February, along with the commencement of examinations for students at various levels from the last week of February, the cabinet felt that the elections should be completed as soon as possible,” Minister Ponguleti Srinivas Reddy said.
Election schedule to be issued soon:
Election schedule for Urban Local Bodies (ULBs) will likely be issued on January 20 or any day after that, reports said. However, polls for expanded GHMC may not be held now.
Hyderabad Metro expansion, other projects:
Minister Ponguleti Srinivas Reddy said that the cabinet comprehensively discussed the issue of taking over the Hyderabad Metro Rail Limited project from L&T and decided to expedite the process. In the meantime, the cabinet has approved undertaking land acquisition for the A and B extensions as part of Metro Phase-2 on a war footing, allocating ₹2,787 crore for this purpose.
Other decisions taken by the cabinet include the construction of Potlapur Lift Irrigation Project in Mulugu district at a cost of Rs 143 crore, organising Godavari Pushkaralu, scheduled to take place from July 27 to August 3, 2027, with a comprehensive plan.
The cabinet also approved the construction of a new road stretching approximately 9 km from the Hyderabad Integrated Command and Control Center (ICCC) to Shilpa Layout and the establishment of a law college within the Mahatma Gandhi University premises in Nalgonda district.
