Telangana: Woman returns from USA to contest panchayat elections in Nagarkurnool

The woman identified as Kamatam Nandini, was recently in the US for her daughter's delivery and returned to file her nomination.

A woman returned from the USA to her native village of Lattupalli, Bijnepalli mandal, Nagarkurnool district of Telangana, to contest for Sarpanch elections in Gram Panchayat elections.

The woman identified as Kamatam Nandini and her husband Srinivas Reddy have three children who settled in the USA. Nandini, who was recently in the US for her daughter’s delivery, returned to file her nomination.

Speaking to the media, Nandini said that after 40 years, the post of Sarpanch of Lattupalli village was reserved for women in the Panchayat elections, and that she got the opportunity to contest after the government scrapped the two-child rule for local body polls.

“I want to fight for the village and play a role in solving the drainage, water problems. I want to serve the people of the village and that is my main aim,” she said.  

What is the two-child rule?

In October, the state government scrapped the two child rule that would disqualify candidates with more than two children. The rule introduced in 1994 in an undivided AP, applied to candidates contesting Gram Panchayat, MPTC, ZPTC elections.

How many nominations have been filed in phase-2?

At least 12,479 nominations have been filed for 4,332 sarpanch posts till Monday, December 1 in second phase while 1,07,930 nominations have been filed in a total of 31 districts in the first phase. About 25,654 nominations have been registered for Sarpanch posts and 82,276 nominations for wards, state election commission said. 

The elections will be held in three phases on December 11, 14, 17 and will cover 12,278 gram panchayats for the post of sarpanch, comprising over 1.12 lakh wards.
