New Delhi: India came down heavily upon Pakistan at the United Nations on Tuesday as it called out the country's duplicity on issues of terrorism and international peace. India’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Ambassador P Harish also highlighted the differences between the two nuclear-armed neighbours on several parameters including security, social and financial.
Harish made the remarks while addressing the UNSC's high-level open debate on 'Promoting International Peace and Security through Multilateralism and Peaceful Settlement of Disputes'.
He pointed out that India is making strides in the global economy whereas Pakistan is immersed in terrorism and busy seeking funds from international platforms. “On one hand, there is India — a matured democracy, a surging economy, a pluralistic and inclusive society. At the other extreme is Pakistan, steeped in fanaticism and terrorism, and a serial borrower from the IMF," he said.
Urging the UNSC to universally uphold the principle of zero tolerance for terrorism, Harish said that it is the fundamental principle that must be recognised and respected. "It ill behoves a member of the Council to offer homilies while indulging in practices that are unacceptable to the international community," he said.
He also slammed Pakistan over the gruesome terrorist attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir on April 22, which claimed 26 lives and said India launched Operation Sindoor targeting terror camps in Pakistan and Pakistan-Occupied Kashmir (POK). He described the military action by New Delhi "focused, measured, and non-escalatory in nature". He also said that the a cessation of military activities was concluded at the request of Pakistan.
"There should also be a serious cost to states who violate the spirit of good neighbourliness and international relations by fomenting cross-border terrorism," he added.
