New Delhi: Contaminated Narmada tap water is threatening the lives of people in Indore's Bhagirathpura area. More than 35 people have fallen ill from drinking the contaminated water, while three have died during treatment. Complaints of dirty water were being made in the area for the last 15 days, but no solution was found.
Cases of vomiting, diarrhea, stomach pain, and weakness have risen rapidly in the area. Around 2,000 people are reported to be affected. Many patients are admitted to various hospitals in Indore. 25 to 30 health department teams are conducting door-to-door surveys. So far, more than 1,100 homes have been inspected, and residents have been advised to boil their water before drinking. Water samples have been sent for testing, with results expected within 48 hours.
According to CMO Madhav Hasani, this case is not related to a virus or food poisoning, but to contaminated water. All patients are being treated free of charge. Meanwhile, Mayor Pushyamitra Bhargava admitted that sewage water was being found at one location in the main line, which is being fixed. Instructions have been given to take action against the culprits and replace the line in the future.
Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Dr Mohan Yadav took to X and said, "Taking the incident of citizens getting infected due to contaminated water in the Bhagirathpura area of Indore with utmost seriousness, the concerned Zonal Officer of Zone Number 4, Assistant Engineer, and In-Charge Assistant Engineer PHE have been suspended with immediate effect, and the In-Charge Assistant Engineer PHE has been removed from service with immediate effect."
Congress state president Jitu Patwari arrived at the scene and leveled serious allegations against the government and the municipal corporation. He called it administrative negligence and demanded that a case of culpable homicide be registered.
