New Delhi: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has decided to approach the Supreme Court against the Delhi high court's recent order suspending the sentence of former BJP MLA Kuldeep Singh Sengar and granting him bail in the Unnao rape case.
The agency is expected to file a Special Leave Petition (SLP) before the apex court. The decision comes a day after the Delhi high court's division bench allowed Sengar's appeal seeking suspension of his sentence pending adjudication.
During the hearing before the high court, both the CBI and the survivor's family had strongly opposed Sengar's plea for bail, citing concerns over the survivor's safety and threats to her family.
The CBI said it had filed its response and written submissions within the stipulated time and had carefully examined the high court's order before deciding to challenge it. According to reports, the agency would move the Supreme Court at the earliest.
Sengar was convicted in 2019 for raping the survivor when she was a minor. While the HC granted him bail by suspending his sentence in the rape case, Sengar will continue to remain in jail as he is also serving a 10-year sentence in connection with the custodial death of the survivor's father.
