Chamoli: Continuous heavy rainfall in Uttarakhand's Chamoli district has triggered multiple landslides and boulder collapses, blocking the Badrinath Highway at five different points. The debris has obstructed stretches near Joshimath and Animath, cutting off traffic at Pagal Nala, Nandprayag, Bhanerpani, Kameda, and Chatwa Peepal.
According to officials, all vehicles have been halted at safe locations to prevent accidents. In a further blow to connectivity, a motorable bridge on the Jyotirmath-Malari road was washed away in Tamak Nala, leaving the route completely impassable. "Badrinath National Highway is blocked at Pagalnala, Nandprayag, Bhanerpani, Kameda, Chatwa Pipal. Jyotirmath-Malari Road is completely blocked for traffic after the bridge in Tamak Nala was washed away. In the Tharali area, the road is blocked in Kotdeep," Chamoli Police said on social media platform X.
Authorities reported that heavy rains have disrupted access to several villages in the border Niti Valley region. The situation worsened after a cloudburst on Friday in Mopata village under Dewal Tehsil, where two people went missing and two others were injured. Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami acknowledged the crisis, saying, "Debris flow after the cloudburst has blocked areas, leaving several people stranded." He added that he remains in constant touch with officials and has directed the Disaster Secretary and District Magistrate to ensure relief and rescue efforts are carried out on a war footing.
Rescue and relief operations are underway with teams from the local administration and disaster management working in affected areas. Authorities have assured that all necessary assistance is being provided and the situation is under continuous monitoring. Last week, following a similar cloudburst in Chamoli, the Chief Minister visited Tharali to review operations. He had then announced immediate financial aid of Rs 5 lakh for families who lost their houses or relatives in the disaster.
