Dehradun: The winter chill has tightened its grip on Uttarakhand, with temperatures dropping sharply in many districts. In the capital Dehradun, residents are experiencing biting cold in the mornings and evenings, while bright sunshine during the day offers temporary relief.
However, the cold intensifies as night falls, making life difficult in both plains and hilly regions.
Weather to remain dry in coming days
According to the Meteorological Center, the weather is expected to remain dry across the state for the next few days. No rainfall has been forecast, but the department has issued a yellow alert for dense fog in several districts, including Haridwar, Udham Singh Nagar, Nainital, Champawat, Pauri, and the plains of Dehradun. Cold day-like conditions are likely in parts of Udham Singh Nagar, where temperatures may remain low throughout the day.
Temperatures have dropped below freezing in Chakrata
In the high-altitude areas of Chakrata in Dehradun, the situation is particularly severe. Temperatures have dropped below freezing, causing water in drinking water pipelines to freeze. This has disrupted the water supply in many homes, adding to the hardships of residents. Even during the day, water is freezing in exposed lines, highlighting the intensity of the cold wave.
Dense fog in Haridwar, US Nagar
Dense fog has enveloped parts of Haridwar and Udham Singh Nagar, reducing visibility and affecting daily life. Meanwhile, hilly areas such as Chakrata and Mussoorie are witnessing bright sunshine during the day, but the relief is short-lived as icy winds return in the evening.
Frost in some mountainous regions
The Meteorological Department has also warned of frost in some mountainous regions. Farmers are concerned as the dry cold is affecting crops and horticulture. While snowfall would have benefited apple orchards and other winter crops, the absence of precipitation has left fields vulnerable to frost damage.
Life disrupted in state due to the severe cold conditions
Public life is being disrupted across the state. In Dehradun, residents reported shivering cold in the morning hours, followed by brief comfort when the sun appeared. By evening, however, cold winds swept through the city, intensifying the chill. In rural areas, frozen water lines and frost on roads are making daily routines more challenging.
People are advised to take precautions against the cold wave
The department has advised people to take precautions against the cold wave and fog. Commuters have been urged to drive carefully in fog-affected districts, while residents in hilly areas are being asked to protect water pipelines and store drinking water to avoid shortages.
With the dry cold wave showing no signs of easing, Uttarakhand is bracing for more freezing nights and foggy mornings in the days ahead.
