Dehradun: Uttarakhand is reeling under intense rainfall, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) and NDMA’s Sachet portal issuing an orange alert for August 11.
Heavy to very heavy rain is expected in Bageshwar, while Dehradun, Tehri, Pauri, and Nainital districts are likely to receive heavy showers. Thunderstorms with lightning and intense spells of rain may occur across all districts.
Schools shut in Dehradun
In Dehradun, the district administration has declared a one-day holiday for all educational institutions and Anganwadi centers from classes 1 to 12. The Chief Education Officer and District Program Officer have been directed to ensure full compliance. The order applies to students, teachers, and school staff alike.
Increased risk of flash floods and landslides
Rain has also caused traffic disruptions in Mussoorie. A large tree fell near Centenary School, blocking roads. On National Highway 707A Kempty Road, a crack has left only one lane open, making movement difficult.
The Disaster Operations Center has urged residents to stay away from rivers and drains due to the increased risk of flash floods and landslides. On Sunday, two children were swept away by the strong current of the Shanti Vihar drain in Dehradun. One child was rescued with the help of locals and police, while the other was found dead nearly 3 km away.
District Magistrate has banned all trekking routes
In Chamoli district, the Rudranath Dham Yatra and Valley of Flowers trek have been suspended. The District Magistrate has banned all trekking routes until August 15. Tourists have been advised to avoid travel during the rain alert.
Nainital’s tourism sector is facing a major setback. The city, which expected a boost in visitors over the upcoming long weekend, has seen nearly 50% of advance bookings cancelled. The recent Uttarkashi disaster has further dampened travel plans, leaving hoteliers and business owners disappointed.
Massive landslide on the Kedarnath highway
On the Kedarnath highway, a massive landslide at the Ratauli Jawari bypass has halted traffic in both directions. A mound of debris, estimated to be 10 to 15 feet high, has covered the road. Officials say it may take four to five days to clear the area, and the road may have suffered damage over a stretch of 25 to 30 meters.
Meanwhile, Dehradun’s temperature is expected to range between 24.3°C and 31.1°C. While the rain has brought relief from the heat, waterlogging has caused inconvenience across the city.
Residents are advised to follow official instructions
Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely. Residents are advised to follow official instructions, avoid unnecessary travel, and stay indoors during intense rainfall. The state’s disaster response teams remain on alert to manage emergencies and ensure public safety.
