Dehradun: The cold wave in Uttarakhand has intensified, with the plains experiencing harsher conditions than the mountains. The Meteorological Center has issued a yellow alert for dense fog in Haridwar and Udham Singh Nagar districts.

Fog disrupts daily life

Dense fog has made driving difficult and disrupted transport services. Rail and air travel have been affected, with poor visibility causing delays and cancellations. At Dehradun airport, a flight from Delhi was diverted to Chandigarh, while another flight from Jaipur was cancelled. Several other flights arrived late, adding to passenger woes.

Weather forecast

According to the Meteorological Department, the weather will remain dry across the state until Thursday, with partially cloudy skies expected in Dehradun. However, rain and snowfall are forecast in the mountainous districts of Uttarkashi, Chamoli, Rudraprayag, and Pithoragarh on Saturday. Snowfall is likely in areas above 3,500 meters.

Cold intensifies in plains

Cold winds swept through Dehradun on Wednesday, further lowering temperatures. Clouds gathered during the day, and fog descended in the evening, intensifying the chill. Residents in Haridwar and Rishikesh reported sudden drops in temperature, while the plains overall are facing harsher conditions compared to the mountains.

Impact on people

The dense fog has not only disrupted travel but also increased health risks. Doctors advise residents, especially children and the elderly, to take precautions against respiratory problems that worsen in cold and foggy conditions. Commuters are being urged to drive carefully due to poor visibility.

Cold and foggy conditions will continue

Meteorologists predict that the cold and foggy conditions will continue for the next week. With rain and snowfall expected in the hills, the plains may see further drops in temperature. The yellow alert remains in place for Haridwar and Udham Singh Nagar, where dense fog is likely to persist.
