Dehradun: Uttarakhand is bracing for a change in weather as light rain and snowfall are expected in several mountainous districts, while dense fog continues to grip the plains.
The Meteorological Department has issued a yellow alert for fog in Haridwar, Dehradun, Udham Singh Nagar, Champawat, Nainital, and Pauri.
Fog grips plains, cold wave intensifies
Dense fog has been lingering in the plains of Uttarakhand, causing a sharp drop in temperatures. On Monday, Dehradun was covered in thick fog during the morning hours, delaying sunrise. Although bright sunshine later in the day provided some relief, partial clouds returned by evening, bringing back the chill.
Nighttime fog and cold winds have worsened the cold wave in Dehradun and surrounding areas. In Udham Singh Nagar and Haridwar, temperatures have dipped 4 to 6 degrees Celsius below normal. The persistent fog has also disrupted rail and air services, adding to the difficulties faced by residents.
Sunshine in mountains, chill in plains
While the plains are struggling with fog and cold days, the mountainous regions have seen bright sunshine, leading to a slight rise in maximum temperatures. However, the relief is expected to be short‑lived as rain and snowfall are forecast in parts of Uttarkashi, Chamoli, Rudraprayag, and Pithoragarh.
The Meteorological Department has predicted that the weather will remain similar on December 31, with fog in the plains and light precipitation in the hills. This change is likely to bring colder conditions across the state, from the mountains to the plains.
