Dehradun: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for heavy rainfall across five districts of Uttarakhand: Dehradun, Uttarkashi, Rudraprayag, Pithoragarh, and Bageshwar.
The alert warns of isolated thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and intense rainfall in all districts, raising concerns over further disruption in the hill state’s fragile terrain. Apart from this, all the major Alaknanda Ghats have been submerged in Badrinath.
Heavy rains dropped the temp in Dehradun
Heavy rains overnight dropped temperatures below seasonal norms in Dehradun, where cloudy skies and intermittent showers continued into Tuesday morning. Similar weather patterns were reported across the plains of Udham Singh Nagar and Champawat. Meanwhile, the Char Dham Yatra routes experienced light to moderate rain, posing safety risks for pilgrims.
China border road in Pithoragarh remained blocked on the second day
The Tawaghat-Lipulekh road in Pithoragarh—critical for connectivity with the China border—remains blocked for the second consecutive day. Debris and boulders in Melghat have not only halted movement but injured a JCB operator during road-clearing efforts. Continuous stone falls have rendered repair work dangerous and uncertain.
Landslide in Chamoli
Landslides have also struck Chamoli district, particularly along the Mandal-Ukhimath highway and near Dewal Dhar village, where 30 meters of terrain below the settlement are slipping. Residents of 16 villages have been affected due to frequent road closures. Essential travel has become nearly impossible as debris accumulation continues to grow. The state’s already strained infrastructure faces compounding pressure as rainfall intensity builds.
All the major Alaknanda Ghats have been submerged in Badrinath
In Badrinath, rising water levels in the Alaknanda River have submerged all major ghats. On Monday afternoon, the river surged unexpectedly, prompting swift evacuation of Brahma Kapal by pilgrimage priests. SDRF teams have since been stationed at riverbanks and public entry has been restricted to prevent accidents.
IMD forecast continued rainfall across the region
The IMD has forecast continued rainfall across the region and warns that isolated locations may see intense spells with thunder and lightning. Disaster management officials are monitoring vulnerable zones and urging caution, especially in landslide-prone and riverside areas. Residents are advised to stay informed via local alerts and avoid non-essential travel until conditions stabilize.
