Dehradun: The weather in Uttarakhand is changing frequently, causing trouble for both locals and tourists. One moment, there is bright sunshine causing heat and humidity, and the next moment, dark clouds bring sudden rain.

Many districts are likely to receive heavy rainfall

According to the weather department, districts like Almora, Tehri, Rudraprayag, Uttarkashi, Chamoli, Pithoragarh, Nainital, and Pauri are likely to receive heavy rainfall. In the plains — Dehradun, Haridwar, and Udham Singh Nagar — the warning is mainly for lightning and thunderstorms.

Dehradun experienced scorching sun during the day

On Tuesday, Dehradun experienced scorching sun during the day, causing discomfort due to humid heat. However, light rainfall in the afternoon brought some relief. The weather in Dehradun on Wednesday is expected to be partly cloudy, with light to moderate rain likely in some areas. The maximum temperature may touch 33°C, and the minimum could be around 23°C.

Over 200 roads closed

The constant rain and landslides in the hills have made travel very risky. As of now, 203 roads are closed across the state. These include: 116 roads under PMGSY (Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana), 86 roads under the Public Works Department (PWD) and National Highways and one road under the Border Roads Organisation (BRO). The worst-affected districts are Uttarkashi and Chamoli, where 32 roads each are blocked. Other affected districts include Rudraprayag (27 roads), Pithoragarh (21), Pauri (19), Tehri (22), Dehradun (13), Almora (25), Bageshwar (9), Nainital (2) and Haridwar (1).

On the Gangotri Highway, a massive landslide near Nalupani on Monday blocked the road due to fallen debris, trees, and boulders. The BRO managed to reopen the road within 24 hours using heavy machines. However, debris is still falling, and the area remains dangerous.

Shuttle service to Gangotri Dham resumes

In a positive development, devotees have returned to Gangotri Dham after 35 days since the Dharali disaster in Uttarkashi. A shuttle service is being used to safely transport pilgrims from Uttarkashi to Gangotri. This arrangement will continue for the next few days until roads are fully repaired.

Sensitive landslide zones a major risk

The Kotdwar-Dugadda route also saw a breakthrough after days of obstruction due to a large boulder. The NH Dhumakot team successfully blasted the boulder and cleared the road. However, the hill near this highway is highly sensitive to landslides and remains risky.

The frequent weather changes, combined with landslides and blocked roads, continue to pose challenges for locals, pilgrims, and authorities. People are advised to stay alert, avoid unnecessary travel in hilly areas, and follow official weather updates and travel advisories.
