Uttarkashi: Twelve days after a massive flood hit Uttarkashi’s Dharali village, a silver idol of Dharali local deity Maa Rajrajeshwari was found safe under layers of debris, bringing hope and tears to the disaster-struck villagers of Galanthok. The temple had been buried in the flood, and most believed the idol was lost forever.

The flood on August 5 destroyed homes, shops, and ancient buildings in the old village of Galanthok. Among the structures lost was the 200–300-year-old temple of Kuldevi Rajrajeshwari, worshipped by generations of villagers. Rescue teams have been working day and night to clear the debris and search for missing people.

The idol was found under a buried tree

During an excavation, workers found a large tree buried about five to seven feet deep. When they removed it, they discovered the silver idol of Maa Rajrajeshwari, her dagger, and other sacred items including the Panchmukhi idol of the five Pandavas, Lord Shiva, and a Shaligram stone. All were found completely unharmed.

This is the third time the idol has survived a calamity

The news spread quickly, and villagers rushed to the site. Many became emotional upon seeing the idol, which they believe has protected the village through past disasters. “This is the third time the idol has survived a calamity,” said Rajesh Panwar, a resident of Galanthok. “Earlier, during a fire in the 1970s, the building where the idol was kept remained untouched.”

Locals see this as a divine sign. “Even in this flood, a tree fell on the idol and somehow shielded it. Not a single scratch was found. The tilak and bindi on the idol were still visible,” said another villager.

The rescue team handed over the idol to the villagers, who performed a small puja at the site. Many prayed for the safety of those still missing and hoped the goddess would guide the search efforts. For the people of Galanthok, the survival of their Kuldevi’s idol is more than just a miracle.

Many families are still waiting for news of their loved ones

The Dharali disaster has left the region shaken. Several homes and businesses were destroyed, and many families are still waiting for news of their loved ones. Rescue operations continue, with teams using advanced equipment to search through the rubble. Geologists have also visited the area to study the cause of the flood and assess future risks. The government is planning rehabilitation for affected families and exploring ways to strengthen infrastructure in the region.
