Father rapes and murders daughter in Bengal, sentenced to death by POCSO court

Kolkata: In an age when people are becoming more conscious about the importance of humanity, some instances remind us that evil persists, rearing its ugly, inhuman head more often than not.

In West Bengal, a harrowing incident has come to light in which a father has raped and murdered his daughter. Yes, you have read that right. The incident has sent shockwaves across society and has raised questions about how cruel a human being can be.

The police and the court concluded that the father raped his daughter, as his DNA was found on the minor's private parts. Notably, the special POCSO court in Asansol sentenced the father to death on Wednesday. The sentence was announced within a year and three months of the incident.

Special Public Prosecutor in this case, Somnath Chatterjee, said, "This chilling murder at Narsinghbandh under Hirapur police station in West Burdwan came to light on the morning of May 13, 2024. The girl's mother's cries awakened the neighbours. The 15-year-old girl was lying in bed, with injury marks on her neck and blood oozing out from her nose and ears. When the mother tried to take her daughter to the hospital, the father stopped her. The neighbours stepped in and took the girl to the hospital, where she was pronounced dead."

The girl's mother suspected that her husband had murdered her. She filed a complaint with the police the next day, based on which the accused was arrested. As the investigation into the incident progressed, everyone shivered at the brutality of the murder. The autopsy revealed that the girl was raped before she was strangled to death with a rope.

Police recovered the rope used in the murder from a dustbin, and the accused's DNA was found on the private parts of the minor. A total of 16 witnesses testified in the court, and later, during the probe, the accused confessed to his crime to the magistrate. Finally, 15 months later, Judge Suparna Bandyopadhyay convicted the accused father on Monday and sentenced him to death on Wednesday for perpetrating the brutal crime on his daughter.
