Who is Sanku Dey, the Meghalaya statistics professor named among Stanford University’s top scientists?
Sanku Dey, a statistics teacher from St Anthony's College, Shillong, achieves global recognition by featuring in Stanford University's top 2% scientists list for the fifth consecutive year.
New Delhi: Sanku Dey, a teacher of statistics at St Anthony’s College in Meghalaya’s Shillong, who is going to retire in three months, has been featured in Stanford University’s list of the top 2% of scientists in the world for the fifth year in a row.
Stanford University evaluated 1.17 crore researchers from different parts of the world. Out of them, around 2.34 lakh have featured in the list, including 23,549 statisticians. In the prestigious list, Dey has secured a rank of 54,006, and is in the 267th spot among statisticians.
Who is Sanku Dey?
A statistics teacher, Sanku Dey, is the first person from the Northeast to feature in Stanford University’s list of the top 2% of scientists in the world. His main fields of expertise are statistics and mathematics. In 2021, his rank in the list was 1,04,260, and it was 1,07,863 in 2022. In 2023, his rank was 51,491, and in the next year, it slipped to 57,410.
Dey has five siblings, and he is the youngest of them. He was born at Kharupetia, a small town in Assam’s Darrang, and did his schooling there. Dey did his postgraduate studies in statistics from Gauhati University.
A teacher for 30 years, he has taught at Gauhati University, Kokrajhar College, Banaras Hindu University, and Saudi Arabia’s King Abdulaziz University. In 2000, he started teaching at St Anthony’s College and is the head of the Department of Statistics. In his own words, Dey fell in love with statistics while doing his honours in the subject.
