New Delhi: Shashi Tharoor's recent praise of Prime Minister Narendra Modi has not gone down well with many of his colleagues in the Congress party. Senior leader Sandeep Dikshit questioned Tharoor and asked him "why was he even with the Congress". He also went on to term the Thiruvananthapuram MP, "a hypocrite."

Tharoor does not know much about country: Sandeepn Dikshit

Slamming Tharoor, Dikshit said, "Shashi Tharoor's problem is that I don't think he knows a lot about the country. If, according to you, someone is doing good for the country, by going against the Congress policies, then you should follow those policies. Why are you in the Congress? Is it because you are an MP?"

Dikshit also asked for an explanation from Tharoor. He said that if Tharoor really thinks that PM Modi's strategies are working better for the country that the party he was in, then he really needs to give an explanation. He added that if Tharoor fails to give an explanation for the praise then he was a "hypocrite."

Earlier, another Congress leader Supriya Shrinate had echoed similar sentiments regarding Tharoor. She said that she "did not find anything worth appreciating in PM Modi's speech" and "she didn't know how Tharoor found one." She said that the PM needed to answer a lot of things and explain what his problem with fair journalism was.

Shrinate termed PM Modi's speech as "petty" and said that she did not understand how Tharoor found a reason to praise him for it. She reminded the Thiruvananthapuram MP that the PM criticised the Congress too in his speech.

Tharoor's post on attending PM Modi's Ramnath Goenka Lecture which caused the storm

Earlier Tharoor had posted about attending the Ramnath Goenka Lecture by PM Modi. He wrote a short analytical speech regarding what he thought about it.

The Congress leader praised PM Modi's speech, saying that "it served as both an economic outlook and cultural call to action." He claimed that the PM urged the nation to be "restless for progress."

He further wrote, "The PM emphasized that India is no longer just an 'emerging market' but an 'emerging model' for the world, noting its economic resilience. PM Modi said he’d been accused of being in "election mode” all the time, but he was really in "emotional mode” to redress the problems of the people."

The Congress leader said that through his speech, PM Modi tried to "Overturn Macaulay's 200-year legacy of "slave mentality." He said that the PM appealed for a 10-year national mission to restore pride in India’s heritage, languages, and knowledge systems. He added that PM Modi reminded people during the lecture that Ramnath Goenka had used the English language to raise voice of nationalism.

This praise of the PM, by Tharoor, clearly did not go down well with Congress leaders. Earlier also the Thiruvananthapuram MP has raised eyebrows in his party, over his stand on several issues, where he is seen deviating from the party line.
