Will two-wheelers have to pay user fee at toll plazas? NHAI issues clarification | What rules say

The Ministry of Road Transport & Highways said that user fee on national highways is collected as per the National Highway Fee (Determination of Rates and Collection) Rules, 2008.

New Delhi: The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has rejected news circuiting on social media regarding toll collection from two wheelers on toll plazas and clarified that motorbike riders will not have to pay any such fee on national highways and national expressways across the country.

In a statement, the Ministry of Road Transport & Highways said, "In reference to the fake news circuiting on social media regarding toll collection from two wheelers on toll plaza, NHAI would like to clarify that no user fee is levied from two wheelers at the Toll plazas on National Highways and National Expressways across the country."

The ministry further said that user fee on national highways is collected as per the National Highway Fee (Determination of Rates and Collection) Rules, 2008 and clarified that have issued any proposal to chare toll plaza fee from the two wheelers.

What the rules say?

According to the rules, only four or more wheeled vehicles have to pay user fee at toll plazas on national highways. The vehicles include categories like car, jeep, van or light motor vehicle, light commercial vehicle, light goods vehicle or mini bus.  The user fee at toll plazas is also charged from bus or truck, heavy construction machinery or earth moving equipment or multi axle vehicle (three to six axles), oversized vehicles (seven or more axles). Two wheelers do not come under the ambit of the National Highway Fee (Determination of Rates and Collection) Rules, 2008.
