New Delhi: Zomato founder Deepinder Goyal has announced that LAT Aerospace, an aviation startup he co-founded, is taking on the ambitious task of developing commercial gas turbine engines entirely in India, a first for the country. In a post on X, Goyal wrote that the company is assembling a propulsion research team in Bengaluru to design and build gas turbine engines that are commercially viable, starting from scratch.

A different approach to R&D

Goyal highlighted that LAT Aerospace is adopting a completely unconventional research and development model. "We’re giving engineers the freedom to think, build, break, and repeat," he wrote. The company’s dedicated research centre will feature state-of-the-art labs for combustion, turbomachinery, thermal systems, and materials, allowing teams to test and iterate without delays caused by red tape.

"This team will be led by engineers. No waiting around for approvals from ‘business’ people. No chasing slides or meetings. Just hands-on problem solving, running bench tests, working with suppliers, building hardware from scratch — and pushing the limits of design and physics every day," Goyal added.

Focus on regional aviation

LAT Aerospace, which Goyal launched this year with co-founder Surobhi Das, is targeting the regional air travel market. The startup has reportedly secured around USD 50 million in funding, of which Goyal personally invested USD 20 million. The company is now hiring aerospace engineers, system designers, and aviation enthusiasts to drive its ambitious plans forward.

Earlier in July, Goyal dismissed media speculation that LAT Aerospace had purchased a Bombardier Global private jet. "LAT is a startup and has not bought any private jet," he clarified on X, reiterating that "We are focused on building aircraft for regional aviation and are not in the business of buying planes."
