1. Krishna singhasan

Your wardrobe certainly has new, unused clothes. Take it out and place it on a wooden or metal stool to create a singhasan for little Krishna. Create mini pillows with the same fabric and fill them with cotton or sponges, or shredded clothes. Tuck a fake plumage of peacock feathers on the singhasan to match the spirit of Janmashtami.

2. Floral and leaf background

Pluck flowers and leaves from the terrace garden or nearby park to decorate the wall behind the Krishna singhasan or jhula. Paste flowers on each leaf and write Happy Janmashtami or Jai Sri Krishna, or Radhe Krishna on it. Decorate the wall with these leaves.

3. Rangoli designs

You can reutilise colours from Holi to create a plain design or intricate motifs. Peacock feathers, dahi matkis, flutes, footprints that symbolise Lord Krishna, or text Shubh Janmashtami, Happy Janmashtami or Hare Krishna and Radhe Krishna will add to the theme. If there’s no colour, make flower rangolis.

4. Fairy lights

Surely you must have saved fairy lights from your last Diwali. Use these to decorate the entire home, mainly the jhula and temple area. Drape these beautifully on your home temple or create a luminous backdrop with these lights to create a divine aura.

5. Puja thali

On a clean brass thali, place an idol of baby Krishna at the centre and sacred offerings in small bowls. Include sweets, cut fruits, and Krishna’s favourite – makhan. Add a tiny container of kumkum, some rice grains, and a few fresh flowers to finish the setup.

6. Peacock feathers

Peacock, the symbol of purity and grace, have been connected with Lord Krishna. Arrange the paper cuttings of feathers elegantly behind the singhasan, or put plumes in a tall flower vase if you do not have the real ones.

7. Diyas

We don’t throw diyas or earthen lamps during Diwali. Wash these and reuse them for bringing a warm and divine aura to Janmashtami decorations. It symbolises the dispelling of darkness and welcoming positivity. Put them around your home and in the home temple.

8. Jhula decoration

For creating the Janmashtami jhula, size doesn’t matter. Create a beautiful and tiny jhula with the help of cardboard and fabric. Adorn it with tiny Krishna idols, mini garlands or paper cuttings of cows.
