History of Grandparents Day 2025

Marian McQuade was the driving force behind the concept of a special day for grandparents in America in the 1970s. A homemaker and social activist from West Virginia, she had a strong background in elder care. So, McQuade wished to inspire families to visit nursing facilities and honour the contributions of senior citizens. She encouraged youngsters to ‘adopt’ a grandparent and get to know their life, struggles, and future goals.

As a result of her widespread campaign, in 1978, the US Senate and then-President Jimmy Carter officially declared the first Sunday after Labour Day as National Grandparents Day. Jimmy Carter signed the proclamation on August 3, 1978, and the following year, the day was officially celebrated.

The celebration quickly spread across the globe, and while multiple nations now celebrate it on different dates, the idea of appreciating the elderly for their knowledge and nurturing presence is still the same.

Significance of Grandparents Day

We feel fortunate to have two sets of grandparents, whose pure and unconditional love creates the foundation of the bond. On this day, we all remind ourselves of the grandparents’ contributions to raising us and creating social awareness. If we face any emotional conflict, grandparents are the ones who act as emotional anchors in today’s fast-paced world. Our grandparents are frequently our first connection to our ancestry, and their presence is a combination of love, patience, and direction.

Grandparents Day serves as an important reminder to re-establish relationships, as many modern families choose nuclear arrangements and suffer from the effects of digital estrangement. Through simple visits, phone conversations, video conferences, or handwritten notes, it encourages younger generations to take their time and spend meaningful time with their elders.

So, cherish your grandparents and their world on Grandparents Day 2025.
