New Delhi: Hartalika Teej 2025, to be celebrated on August 26, usually falls on Shukla Paksha Tritiya of Bhadrapada month. This auspicious festival is observed by married women for marital bliss, happiness and longevity of their husbands. They worship Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati with devotion, observe fast and listen to the Hartalika Teej Vrat Katha. The term Hartalika comes from two words – harat, meaning to abduct, and alika, meaning a female friend. The festival traces its origin to a powerful legend where Goddess Parvati performed intense penance to marry Lord Shiva.

When King Himavan, the father of Goddess Parvati, attempted to marry her off to another, her friends secretly took her to the forest so she could continue her penance and fulfil her wish to marry Shiva. This act of devotion and friendship is celebrated through the observance of Hartalika Teej each year. On this day, while women perform the prayer by wearing 16 adornments, the charm of the celebration truly comes alive when the prayer area reflects the same festive grandeur. And preparing the mandap and phulera during the fast is considered very auspicious, without which the prayer is considered incomplete.

There is a custom of tying phulera on the Shivling while worshipping.

To make phulera, take five types of colourful flowers, mango leaves, thick thread, a basket with holes and a needle.

With the help of a needle and thread, these flowers are made into a string toran. Put this toran on the basket. Decorate some parts of the basket with flowers so that phulera is ready.

Banana leaves and flowers are needed to prepare the mandap. Lord Shiva and Mother Parvati are worshipped in this mandap.

Take a wooden stool and place it in the place of worship. Tie bamboo sticks on the four legs of this stool.

After this, tie banana leaves on the legs of the stool and make the roof of the mandap by covering it with phulera.

In this mandap, spread a red cloth over the stool and place the idol of Shiv-Gauri. In this way, phulera and mandap are easily prepared on Hartalika Teej.
