New Delhi: Govardhan Puja is celebrated one day after the festival of Diwali, it is deeply spiritual and cultural that pays gratitude and honour to the nature, food, and Lord Krishna by celebrating the divine festival. It symbolises the importance of sustainbility, hummility, and our love and respect for the environment.

The main rituals associated with the festival is preparation of bhog thali for Lord Krishna, which is offered on this special day o honour the nature, food and god for providing it us. A thali cooked with vegetarian items is served to Lord Krishna, devotees express devotion and thank Lord Krishna, for lifting the Govardhan Hill to protect the people of the village from flood rains.

Govardhan Bhog Thali must-haves

  • Plain or Jeera rice: Sybolising purity, and served as a bhog to Lord Krishna.
  • Aloo Sabzi: A comforting, made with minimal ingredients and easy to preapre dish.
  • Kadhi Pakora: A soulful, light on stomach and easy to cook dish for bhog.
  • Puri or chapati: A staple in Indian diet, chapati or puri serve as complete meals
  • Panchamrit: A divine milk of milk, honey, ghee, sugar and curd, offered to deity as bhog
  • Halwa or Kheer: A sweet dish prepared to offer to god as a gesture of thankfulness.
  • Seasonal vegetable or dal: A dish prepared with seasonal vegetable or dal, highligting the bounty of nature and provides nourishment for the season. 

In Hindu culture, there is a ritual of presenting 56 bhog items also known as Chappan Bhog to Lord Krishna on special occasions. On Govardhan Puja also, people preapre bhog thali at home either of 56 items or even lesser as per availibilty to offer to god for a sacred meal.

Moderns adds to traditional bhog

While keeping tradition alive, you can also add a healthy, modern twist — such as using millets instead of rice, low-oil cooking, or adding baked sweets. These changes make your bhog thali wholesome and suitable for all ages without losing its sacred significance.

On this day communities and people come together to offer prayers to Lord Kirshna by prepaing an idol out of cow dung, and worshipping it. Later, bhog is offered to Lord Krishna, and served to people, who sit together to eat symbolising selflessness.
