New Delhi: Chhath Puja is one of the most sacred festivals in India, dedicated to the worship of Surya Dev (the Sun God) and Chhathi Maiya. After the Sandhya Arghya, which is offered to the setting sun, devotees wake before dawn to prepare for the Usha Arghya—the offering made to the rising sun.
This moment marks hope, renewal, and gratitude. It is believed that when the first rays of the sun touch the water and the devotee’s folded hands, blessings flow for health, happiness, and family well-being.
The word Usha means dawn. It represents new beginnings and the victory of light over darkness. During this time, devotees stand in clear river water or a small pond, holding a bamboo basket filled with fruits, sugarcane, and thekua (a traditional sweet).
Facing the rising sun, they offer water while chanting sacred mantras. The vibration of these words connects the mind, body, and soul with the divine rhythm of the universe.
ॐ ऐहि सूर्य सहस्त्रांशो तेजोराशे जगत्पते। अनुकम्पय मां भक्त्या गृहाणार्घ्यं दिवाकर।।
Transliteration: Om Aahi Surya Sahastransho Tejorashe Jagatpate, Anukampaya Maam Bhaktya, Grihana Arghyam Divakara.
Meaning: “O radiant Sun, source of infinite light and lord of all worlds, have mercy on me, your humble devotee, and accept this sacred offering.”
Many devotees also recite these short mantras during the Usha Arghya:
These mantras are pure forms of prayer. Each repetition is a call for divine light to enter life, cleanse negativity, and bring inner peace.
1. Wake before sunrise and bathe in clean water.
2. Prepare the soop or basket with fruits, flowers, and thekua.
3. Stand in water facing the east.
4. Hold the copper vessel or lotta filled with water and milk.
5. Chant the Usha Arghya mantra with a calm and steady mind.
6. Slowly pour the water toward the sun while praying for health, prosperity, and happiness for all.
The act is simple, yet deeply powerful. It brings humility, peace, and clarity of thought.
Usha Arghya is not just a morning prayer—it is a moment of surrender. The rising sun is a reminder that every day offers a new chance to grow and heal. The mantra helps remove fear, pain, and doubt. It fills the heart with gratitude and faith. For many families, this ritual is passed down through generations. Standing together in the golden light, they feel unity, devotion, and strength. It is a prayer for everyone’s well-being, not just one’s own.
It is believed that those who perform Usha Arghya with full faith receive the blessings of Chhathi Maiya and Surya Dev. They gain good health, happiness, and a long life for their family. The ritual also brings mental calmness, especially after the fasting period of the previous days.
The energy of dawn carries healing power. When combined with the mantra’s vibration, it helps purify thoughts and fill the heart with positivity.
Every sunrise during Chhath Puja tells a story of faith. The sound of conch shells, the gentle ripples of water, and the rising orange light together create a sacred silence that words cannot describe. For centuries, this tradition has united families and villages in gratitude to nature. It teaches patience, discipline, and the beauty of giving thanks to the light that sustains all life.
The Usha Arghya of Chhath Puja 2025 is a call to purity, gratitude, and renewal. It is not only a ritual—it is an experience of peace that connects the human heart with the eternal power of the sun.
When you chant the mantra with full devotion, the words become a bridge between you and the divine. Every drop of water offered to Surya Dev carries your prayer to the light of new beginnings.
