After D Gukesh suffered a shock exit on Saturday, India's dismal run continued at the FIDE Chess World Cup 2025 on Sunday as Indian Grandmaster Vidit Gujrathi bowed out of the tournament following his third-round defeat. Gujrathi lost 2.5-3.5 to Sam Shankland of the United States in his third-round clash in the tournament.
Gujrathi lost in the second set of the tie-break games between him and Shankland in the third round in Panjim, Goa, on Sunday. It was another major upset for India after reigning world champion Gukesh crashed out following his loss to world no.85 Frederik Svane of Germany.
India's SL Narayanan also suffered a defeat against China's Yangyi Yu, losing in the first set of the tie-break games between the two. However, Indian grandmaster V Karthik made it to the last 32 after beating Deac Bogdan-Daniel of Romania 1.5-0.5 in his third-round clash in the tournament.
Along with Gukesh, R. Praggnanandhaa and Arjun Erigaisi, Gujrathi was among the strongest contenders for India in the FIDE Chess World Cup 2025. However, he failed to live up to the expectations in his clash against Shankland. India now have five contenders remaining in the last 32 stage.
Praggnanandhaa and Erigaisi are two of India's strongest hopes at the FIDE Chess World Cup 2025 after the exits of Gukesh and Gujrathi. The duo made it to the last 32 after winning their respective third-round matches on Saturday. Praggnanandhaa defeated Robert Hovhannisyan of Armenia, while Erigaisi beat Uzbekistan's Shamsiddin Vokhido to secure their last-32 berths.
On Saturday, Indian grandmasters P Harikrishna and V Pranav also qualified for the last 32 after winning their respective matches. Junior world champion Pranav beat Titas Stremavicius of Lithuania 1.5-0.5, while Harikrishna defeated Belgium's Daniel Dardha by an identical margin.
Karthik became the fifth Indian to advance to the fourth round on Sunday after his win against Deac Bogdan-Daniel of Romania. Karthik drew his first rapid game against Daniel in the third-round clash, before winning the second game with black pieces to qualify for the last 32. He joined Praggnanandhaa, Erigaisi, Harikrishna and Pranav in the 4th round of the tournament.
