Australian Open: Learner Tien stuns Daniil Medvedev, Novak Djokovic enters quarters after walkover
American Learner Tien continued his dream run at the Australian Open 2026 with a stunning win over Daniil Medvedev. Novak Djokovic earned a walkover to enter the quarter-finals after his 4th-round opponent Jakub Mensik withdrew from the tournament.
American teenager Learner Tien stunned Daniil Medvedev in the Last 16 at the Australian Open 2026 on Sunday to enter his maiden Grand Slam quarter-finals. Tien beat Medvedev 6-4, 6-0, 6-3 in straight sets to register an emphatic victory. He staged an upset against the Russian world no.12 for the second successive time at the Australian Open.
Tien defeated Medvedev in the second round of the Australian Open last year after a five-set marathon at Melbourne Park, which lasted over five hours. However, he was far more comfortable this time around as he battered Medvedev in just an hour and 42 minutes to enter the quarter-finals at the Australian Open 2026.
Tien scripted history by becoming the youngest American to enter his maiden Grand Slam quarter-finals since Andy Roddick at the US Open in 2001. While Roddick reached his maiden Grand Slam quarter-finals at 19, Tien is 20. The American is also the youngest quarter-finalist at the Australian Open since Nick Kyrgios in 2015.
Novak Djokovic enters quarter-finals after walkover
Meanwhile, 24-time Grand Slam champion Novak Djokovic entered the quarter-finals at the Australian Open 2026 without having to take the court in his 4th round clash against Jakub Mensik. Mensik withdrew from the tournament due to a abdominal muscle injury on Sunday, January 25, ahead of his fourth-round meeting with Djokovic, handing the Serbian ace a walkover into the quarter-finals.
Coco Gauff beats Karolina Muchova to enter quarter-finals
Coco Gauff continued her winning run at the Australian Open 2026 as she beat Karolina Muchova in her 4th-round clash to enter the quarter-finals. Gauff defeated Muchova 6-1, 3-6, 6-3 at the Margaret Court Arena and will now face the winner of the 4th-round clash between Elina Svitolina or 18-year-old Mirra Andreeva in the quarter-finals.
Zverev, De Minaur win
Last year's finalist, Alexander Zeverev, defeated Argentina's Francisco Cerundolo in straight sets to enter the quarter-finals at the Australian Open 2026. Zverev beat Cerundolo 6-2, 6-4, 6-4 in their fourth-round meeting. Australian no.1 Alex De Minaur beat 10th seed Alexander Bublik with a strong 6-4, 6-1, 6-1 to seal his place in the quarter-finals.
De Minaur, who is aiming to become the first Australian to win the men's singles title at the Australian Open since Mark Edmondson 50 years ago, will take on world no.1 Carlos Alcaraz in the quarter-finals.
