All-round Mumbai Indians hammer Delhi Capitals by 50 runs to bag 1st win in WPL 2026
A stellar all-round effort from Nicola Carey and half-centuries from skipper Harmanpreet Kaur and Nat Sciver-Brunt helped Mumbai Indians thrash Delhi Capitals by 50 runs in the WPL 2026 on Saturday.
Mumbai Indians (MI) produced a dominant all-round performance to hammer Delhi Capitals (DC) by 50 runs at the DY Patil Stadium in Navi Mumbai to bag their first win in the Women's Premier League (WPL) 2026 on Saturday. MI rode on half-centuries from skipper Harmanpreet Kaur, Nat Sciver-Brunt and a brilliant all-round show from Nicola Carey to register a thumping victory.
Carey played a finishing cameo of quickfire 21 off 12 balls with the bat and picked up a three-wicket haul with the ball to help the Mumbai Indians bounce back to winning ways after their crushing 3-wicket defeat against the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) in their opener on Friday.
After fifties from Sciver-Brunt and Harmanpreet powered Mumbai Indians to a strong total of 195/4 in 20 overs, Carey got them off to a dream start with the ball during DC's tricky chase. The Aussie all-rounder dismissed the dangerous Shafali Verma (8) and Laura Wolvaardt (9) cheaply to dismantle DC's top order and set the tone for her side's victory.
Sciver-Brunt drew the first blood for MI by removing DC opener Lizelle Lee cheaply on a run-a-ball 10 before Carey dismissed Shafali and Wolvaardt in quick succession to reduce Delhi to 33/3. DC skipper Jemimah Rodrigues also flopped in her first game as the franchise's captain as she was dismissed by pacer Shabnim Ismail on 1 off 3 balls.
West Indies all-rounder Chinelle Henry waged a lone battle for DC with a 33-ball 56, but her knock wasn't enough as her side fell short by a huge margin in the 196-run chase at the DY Patil Stadium in Mumbai. Carey and Amelia Kerr picked up three wickets apiece, while Sciver-Brunt bagged a two-wicket haul for the Mumbai Indians in the game.
Harmanpreet, Sciver-Brunt shine with the bat for Mumbai Indians
Earlier, skipper Harmanpreet and star all-rounder Sciver-Brunt shone with the bat for the Mumbai Indians to propel them to a strong total after a sloppy start. MI promoted Kerr to open the batting in the absence of injured Hayley Matthews, and the move backfired as the New Zealand all-rounder was removed on a Golden Duck in the first over.
However, Sciver-Brunt and Harmanpreet combined to rescue MI with half-centuries apiece. Sciver-Brunt scored a brilliant 70 off 46 balls, while skipper Harmanpreet smashed an unbeaten 74 off 42 balls, laced with 8 fours and three sixes. The Mumbai Indians skipper bagged the Player of the Match for her stupendous knock against the Capitals.
With the win, the Mumbai Indians opened their account in the WPL 2026 as the defending champions jumped to the top spot on the points table. Meanwhile, Rodrigues-led Delhi Capitals got off to a losing start in the tournament and will be looking to return to winning ways when they take on Gujarat Giants in their next game on Sunday.
