Atkinson injured as England remain in contention in Boxing Day Test
Australia resumed their innings at four for no loss after taking a 42-run lead in the opening day when 20 wickets fell.
New Delhi: England reduced Australia to 98 for six in their second innings at lunch of day two of the Boxing Day Test but still trail by 140 runs in the fourth match of the Ashes series.
Australia resumed their innings at four for no loss after taking a 42-run lead in the opening day when 20 wickets fell.
The hosts lost wickets at regular intervals as they tried to keep the scoreboard moving. Skipper Steve Smith was not out on 16, with all-rounder Cameron Green on six at lunch.
Injury blow for England
The tourists suffered a blow when seamer Gus Atkinson went off injured with a left hamstring strain.
He had dismissed nightwatchman Scott Boland caught behind for six in the sixth over of the morning but left the field after clutching his upper left leg after bowling the final ball of his fifth over.
Seamers Brydon Carse and Josh Tongue, who claimed 5-45 in the first innings, picked up two wickets each as Australia suffered a collapse in a 4-27 burst.
Carse sent back the dangerous Travis Head, cleaning him up for 46 and then had keeper Alex Carey caught in the slips for four.
Tongue claimed No.3 batter Marnus Labuschagne caught in the slips for eight and No.5 Usman Khawaja caught for a duck with a miscued pull-shot to fine leg.
England have already surrendered the series after defeats in the first three Tests in Perth, Brisbane and Adelaide and aim to win a first Test in Australia in 15 years.
