BCCI breaks silence on Shreyas Iyers abrupt departure from India A team

New Delhi: The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has broken silence over the sudden departure of seasoned Shreyas Iyer from the India A squad on Tuesday. Iyer sent shockwaves across the country after he quit India A captaincy just hours before the start of the second unofficial Test match against Australia A.
Initially, Iyer citied personal reasons to the team behind his decision to withdraw from the match at the last hour but now a report has revealed that the seasoned batter had a conversation with the BCCI selection committee over his plans in red-ball cricket for the future. Iyer had been chosen to lead India A in the game against Australia so as the right-handed batter gets some practice ahead of the West Indies Test series.
According to a report in Indian Express, a source from the Indian cricket board informed the newspaper that he is taking a break from red-ball cricket which has been acknowledged as a good move by the BCCI. The board informed the publication that this has made the selectors clear about the future as he won't be playing in the red-ball format in coming days so they won't take him into the scheme of the things. It has also been revealed that Iyer has informed the board that he will assess his body in future and take a call accordingly.
Stiffness the reason behind Iyer's exit?
The middle-order batter had earlier informed the selectors that he is facing stiffness in his back which is the reason why he is calling it quits from the format for a while. The red-ball format demands 4-5 days of action from a player and when a cricketer is not well, it is next to impossible for him to play in the challenging format. Iyer gave the example of a Ranji Trophy game he played last year where he took frequent breaks in between the overs but, the same can't happen during India A or Test cricket assignments.
