South Africa are sweating over the availability of David Miller for the upcoming T20 World Cup after the seasoned batter suffered a suspected groin injury during a SA20 match on Monday.

Playing for the Paarl Royals against the Joburg Super Kings in South Africa's premier T20 competition, Miller sustained the injury while fielding and walked off the field in the 16th over of the innings. Concerns over his fitness grew further after he did not bat during the Royals' chase.

The full nature and extent of Miller's injury is unknown, and the batter himself was unable to provide any update on his injury after the game. "I don't know, we'll see tomorrow when I pick up. Obviously not ideal," he said when asked about the injury.

Miller's presence or absence in the Paarl Royals' next game against the Joburg Super Kings in the Eliminator on Thursday (January 22) will give a fair indication of his fate in the T20 World Cup 2026, which begins on February 7 in India and Sri Lanka.

South Africa will open their campaign against Canada on February 9 in Ahmedabad.

South Africa's injury worry grows

Miller's injury comes as yet another setback for the Proteas, who are already facing fitness concerns surrounding Donovan Ferreira and Tony de Zorzi in the lead-up to the mega event.

While Ferreira suffered a fractured shoulder and was ruled out of the ongoing SA20, de Zorzi is still recovering from a hamstring injury he suffered in December 2025.

Widely regarded as one of the greatest finishers in T20 cricket, Miller is a key member of the South African team, which enters the mega-event with dreams of clinching its maiden T20 World title. The Proteas came mighty close to title triumph in the last edition in 2024 when India edged past them in a nail-biting final in Bridgetown.
