England have added all-rounder Jamie Overton to the squad for the fifth and final Test against India at the Oval, London, starting on July 31, Thursday. Overton adds depth to the English pace attack that was worn out by the Indian batters in the fourth Test at Old Trafford.
The hosts spent 143 overs in the field across the last two days as India forced a memorable draw in Manchester and earned a chance to draw the series.
Captain Ben Stokes, who is doubtful for the series finale due to various injuries, admitted that his team could need "fresh legs" in London.
Chris Woakes and Brydon Carse have played in all four Tests in the series, while Jofra Archer has been part of the playing XI in the previous two since returning from a four-year injury absence.
Overton returns to the squad three years after his only Test appearance in 2022. The 31-year-old Surrey all-rounder is a medium-fast bowler and a more than handy batter in the lower order.
He was bought by IPL side Chennai Super Kings in the mega-auction last year and played three games for the five-time champions in IPL 2025. In his only Test, Overton took two wickets and scored 97 against New Zealand at Leeds in 2022.
Overton is the only change in the England squad, which comprises all 14 players who were selected in the previous game.
The tall all-rounder has played only one first-class match since May, mainly because of a finger injury while playing for England in an ODI match against West Indies in the same month.
England Test Squad for fifth Test: Ben Stokes (C), Jofra Archer, Gus Atkinson, Jacob Bethell, Harry Brook, Brydon Carse, Zak Crawley, Liam Dawson, Ben Duckett, Jamie Overton, Ollie Pope, Joe Root, Jamie Smith, Josh Tongue, Chris Woakes.
