England series becomes most prolific for India in Tests

India's run tally is 3272 and counting in their ongoing Test series against England, the most in their 93-year history.

India have scored most runs in their Test cricket history in the ongoing series against England, reaching the mark in the second session of the fifth and final match the began at The Oval on Thursday.

India lost the toss and were sent into bat on a greenish top and lost their openers Yashasvi Jaiswal for 2 and KL Rahul for 14 to be 72/3 when rain forced an early lunch.

Gus Atkinson dismissed Jaiswal leg before wicket before Rahul played on to a Chris Woakes delivery.

Sai Sudharsan and skipper Shubman Gill were unbeaten 25 and 15 respectively, putting together a 34-run stand, when rain halted proceedings.

When played resumed at 7.30 pm IST, Gill (21) was run out by Atkinson while erroneously trying for a quick single but by then India had scored 3272 runs in a Test series, the most in their 93-year history.

Gill's boys surpassed the 3270 run-mark the Indian team scored in West Indies in 1978-79, when skipper Sunil Gavaskar had scored 732 runs.

Gill went past that Gavaskar mark, scoring 743 runs for the most runs scored by a captain in a Test series.

The new India skipper has scored four centuries in nine innings, including his maiden double hundred, in the series, at an average of 82.56.

Opener KL Rahul is the second on the list of leading scorers in the series with 525 runs in nine innings at 58.33, followed by Rishabh Pant's 479 (seven innings) at 68.43.
