Enroute to comeback, Shreyas Iyer successfully completes first match simulation session
Shreyas Iyer was injured by a spleen laceration and internal bleeding after he attempted to take a diving catch during the third ODI match against Australia in October 2025.
New Delhi: Eyeing a comeback in the later stages of the Vijay Hazare Trophy and subsequent international assignments, seasoned Shreyas Iyer has successfully completed his first match simulation session. Iyer was set to play two match simulation sessions with one being held on Friday and the other scheduled for January 5 and the Indian player has completed the first one on January 2 at the Centre of Excellence (CoE) in Bengaluru.
On road to recovery after suffering a major injury in his spleen few months ago against Australia, this comes as a positive sign for Iyer and the entire Indian team ahead of a packed international calendar and also the Indian Premier League (IPL). The BCCI has made it clear that it is imperative for the Indian player to clear both the sessions so as to get a clearance certificate for participation in the upcoming matches.
Iyer at CoE since Dec 25
Iyer reported to the CoE on December 25 and since then, he has shown tremendous improvement completing four high-intensity skill sessions which included batting as well as bowling. With another simulation session in three days, Iyer is set to receive his clearance certificate in January 9 if he passes the second session on January 5.
Meanwhile, it is being learnt that since he passed the first one, clearing the second one should not be that difficult for the right-handed batter. But since he will not get the clearance certificate before January 9, he participation in the New Zealand ODI series would be difficult.
How did Iyer suffer an injury?
Shreyas Iyer was injured by a spleen laceration and internal bleeding after he attempted to take a spectacular diving catch during the third ODI match against Australia in Sydney in late October 2025. His injury proved to be so bad that he was immediately hospitalised and faced a minor procedure to control the bleeding.
Iyer had suffered the injury while trying to dismiss Alex Carey, falling on his rib cage area. His vitals had also dropped before they were stabilised in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU).
