Gill ready to take ODI captaincy from Rohit, feels former India player
The dashing batter not only led India to a fantastic draw but also ended the five-match series as the leading run-scorer with 754 runs.
New Delhi: Former Indian cricketer Mohammad Kaif believes that young Shubman Gill is ready to take over the ODI captaincy from Rohit Sharma post his stupendous performance in the recently-concluded England Test series. 25-year-old Gill led India to a 2-2 draw in his first series as the Test captain.
The dashing batter not only led India to a fantastic draw but also ended the five-match series as the leading run-scorer with 754 runs in his kitty with four centuries. While many did not expect the youngster to make such an impact in the series especially after the retirement of seniors like Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli and Ravichandran Ashwin.
Kaif hails Gill's captaincy
Kaif hailed Gill's captaincy skills calling him a calm skipper and also backed him to take over the reigns from Rohit as the ODI captain. Further lauding him, Kaif said that he led the Indian team with composure under a lot of pressure for which he should get the ODI captaincy especially keeping in mind Rohit's existence in the 50-over format.
Having retired from the Tests and T20Is, Rohit is expected to call it quits from the fifty-over game as well if his performance dips. Some media reports in the past also suggested that the Mumbai batter might wish to continue till the ODI World Cup, if he manages to do well with the bat and as the skipper.
Meanwhile, further praising Gill, Kaif said that 'he scores in white-ball. He has performed well as captain here in Tests and led from the front. When you go with a young team, you have to do both things - score with the bat and do well as captain,' he said on his YouTube channel. He further said that Gill created opportunities in the series with both hands which helped India achieve the result which it did.
