ICC corrects Virat Kohli ranking blunder after fan criticism as India batter jumps third on all-time list
The International Cricket Council (ICC) has corrected Virat Kohli's tally of days spent as the No.1 batter in the Men's ODI batting rankings, after an earlier official post created confusion over his spot in the all-time list.
New Delhi: Star India batter Virat Kohli's return to the top of the ODI rankings has sparked massive celebrations among fans. He recently claimed the No.1 position in the ICC Men's ODI Rankings for the first time in nearly five years, replacing former India captain Rohit Sharma.
After Kohli reached the No.1 spot in ODI rankings, the International Cricket Council (ICC) made a big mistake in a social media graphic, which triggered a backlash from fans, forcing the global body to correct the error. Kohli scored a match-winning 93 runs off 91 balls in the first ODI to claim the top spot in the rankings.
The ICC posted a graphic stating that the veteran Indian batter had spent 825 days as the No.1 ODI batter in his long career, placing him in 10th position on the list of cricketers with the most days at the top. Fans quickly pointed out that ICC's own records showed that the star Indian batter had far longer at the top.
Seeing the backlash, the ICC deleted the original tweet and posted an updated list with correct figures.
Kohli moves to third on all-time list
After the correction from the ICC, Virat Kohli moved to the third spot on the all-time list of most days spent as No.1 ODI batter. The West Indies legends Sir Vivian Richards (2306 days) and Brian Lara (2079 days) are ahead of him. Kohli (1547 days) is the only Indian batter with the most days spent at the top of the ODI rankings.
He claimed the first position for the 11th time in his career after a brilliant run of scores that included two hundreds and two fifties in a three-match series against South Africa, and in the last ODI against Australia. Kohli first reached the summit of the ODI batting rankings in October 2013. He also notched up a century and a fifty in the Vijay Hazare Trophy for Delhi.
