New Delhi: India's batting woes in the Guwahati Test continued after another torrid session of play saw the hosts reach 174 for 7 at Lunch on Day 3 at the Baraspara Cricket Stadium. After losing four wickets in the opening session, India lost three more in the afternoon as South Africa gained control of the match and the series.
The home side, which still needs 116 runs to avoid a follow-on, needs a miraculous performance from their lower-order to stay alive in the match.
Washington Sundar (32) and Kuldeep Yadav (18) have given some respite to the hosts with a 52-run stand for the eighth wicket after Marco Jansen did the damage early in the post-Tea session. But for their resolute stand off 141 balls, India would have been in much deeper trouble.
Jansen, the wrecker-in-chief, removed Rishabh Pant, Ravindra Jadeja and Nitish Kumar Reddy in quick succession as India lost three wickets inside six overs. Jansen continued from where he left off in the morning session when he removed Dhruv Jurel on the stroke of Tea.
In what was one of the worst collapses, India slumped from 95/1 to 122/7, losing six wickets for just 27 runs to hand the Proteas a massive advantage.
Only Yashasvi Jaiswal (58 off 97 balls) and Sunder (33 not out) made substantial contributions against the visiting bowling line-up after starting the day at 9 for no loss, in reply to South Africa's mammoth 489.
Jansen was the pick of the bowlers for the Proteas with figures of 4/43, while Simon Harmer took two wickets for 61 runs.
Earlier, four Indian wickets fell in the opening session as the Rishabh Pant-led team reached 102 for 4 at tea in reply. Rahul (22), Sai Sudharsan (15), Jurel (0), captain Pant (7), Jadeja (6) and Reddy (10) fell without making a notable impact.
Incidentally, South Africa was the last team to enforce a follow-on against India in Nagpur in 2010, when the Rainbow Nation registered their previous win in the country before the start of this series.
