Indias Asia Cup 2025 squad to be announced today: Focus on Shubman Gill, Yashasvi Jaiswal and Shreyas Iyer
The Ajit Agarkar-led senior Indian national selection panel will announce India's squad for the Asia Cup 2025 on Tuesday. The focus remains on the likes of Shubman Gill, Yashasvi Jaiswal and Shreyas Iyer ahead of the squad announcement.
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) will announce India's squad for the upcoming Asia Cup 2025 on Tuesday, August 19. The Ajit Agarkar-led senior Indian national selection committee will meet at the BCCI headquarters in Mumbai to pick the squad for the continental tournament which is set to get underway in UAE from September 09.
The meeting will also be attended by India's T20I skipper Suryakumar Yadav, who is set to lead the Men in Blue in the Asia Cup 2025. India's squad is expected to be announced at 1:30 PM IST on Tuesday, which will be followed by a press conference which will be attended by skipper Suryakumar and chief selector Agarkar.
The selectors face some tough calls ahead of the selection meeting as they are spoilt for choice with several top players in contention for a spot in the squad for the Asia Cup 2025. India already have a settled team in T20Is which has done exceptionally well since their T20 World Cup triumph last year, however, a number of players are looking to make a return to the T20 setup.
Spotlight on Gill, Iyer and Jaiswal
The spotlight will be on the trio of Shubman Gill, Yashasvi Jaiswal and Shreyas Iyer. All three batters have been in terrific form and have performed well across tournaments in the run-up to the Asia Cup 2025. However, all three are unlikely to make the squad together. As per multiple reports, India's Test captain Gill is unlikely to be picked in the squad despite his stellar show in the recently concluded Test series against England.
Gill hammered a staggering 754 runs against England, recording the second-highest aggregate in a Test series by an Indian. However, his return to T20Is looks difficult as India have a settled opening pair of Sanju Samson and Abhishek Sharma, who have done well at the top. Jaiswal also remains in contention for a spot, and it remains to be seen if he will make the cut as the third opener in the squad.
Iyer has been enjoying a prolific run with the bat over the last few months and was in terrific form for Punjab Kings in the IPL. He smashed over 600 runs while batting in the top four and helped his team reach the final of IPL 2025. Iyer last featured in a T20I for India in December 2023 , and it remains to be seen if he will be handed a comeback in the Asia Cup.
