IPL 2010 winner: Chennai Super Kings
CSK beat Mumbai Indians in the final in IPL 2010.
New Delhi: With five titles, Chennai Super Kings is the joint most successful team in the Indian Super League along with Mumbai Indians. And their successful journey began with a victory in its 2010 edition final against Mumbai CSK
On April 25, 2010, CSK skipper MS Dhoni won the toss and elected to bat, putting on a competitive 168 for 5, with Suresh Raina top scoring for them with an unbeaten 57 and the captain chipping in with 22.
Sri Lanka pacer Dilhara Fernando was the most successful bowler for Mumbai, claiming 2/23 from his four overs. Zaheer Khan (1/24) and Kieron Pollard (1/45) were the other wicket takers for Mumbai, who were captained by Sachin Tendulkar.
Chennai were hobbling at 68/3 after 12 overs with the departure of Murali Vijay (26), Matthew Hayden (17), and S Badrinath (14). But then Raina and Dhoni put together a 72-run stand.
Raina struck three sixes and as many fours in a 35-ball knock and Dhoni hit two boundaries and a six in 15 balls. CSK put on 100 runs in their last eight overs, which is where the match tilted in their favour.
The target was not steep by any means for the home side but ever since R Ashwin began CSK's bowling with a maiden over, Mumbai had to play catch-up.
Tendulkar's laborious 48 off 45 was the lone worthwhile effort, who had lost Shikhar Dhawan for zero. Mumbai also didn't help their cause with questionable decisions of promoting Abhishek Nayar (27) and Harbhajan Singh (1), who failed to deliver with the bat.
Not bringing on the destructive West Indian Kieron Pollard even when they needed 69 off 31 balls with five wickets in hand backfired as they needed 55 from 18 deliveries.
But in the next over when he was caught at mid-off off Albie Morkel, it was curtains for Mumbai.
Brief scores: CSK 168 for 5 (Raina 57 not out, Dhoni 22, Fernando 2/23); Mumbai Indians 146 for 9 (Tendulkar 48, Pollard 27, Jakati 2/27). CSK won by 22 runs.
Memorable year
CSK made the year 2010 a memorable one as after their IPL triumph, they won the now defunct Champions League T20, becoming the first side to win the both tournaments in the same year.
The remarkable achievement cemented CSK's status as one of the topmost franchises in T20 leagues, under the captaincy of Dhoni.
In the CLT20 final, CSK beat Warriors by eight wickets, reaching a target of 129 with six balls to spare as opener Murali Vijay (58) and Mike Hussey's unbeaten 51 ensured a comfortable victory.
