In this edition the BCCI added two new teams to expand the league to 10 teams with Chennai Super Kings being the defending champions after winning their fourth title in 2021.
The 15th edition of the Indian Premier League was held in 2022 that began on March 26 and ended on May 29. The tournament was played under the spectrum of COVID-19 and the bCCI hosted the group stage games in Maharashtra's Mumbai, Navi Mumbai and Pune venues.
In this edition the BCCI added two new teams to expand the league to 10 teams with Chennai Super Kings being the defending champions after winning their fourth title in 2021.
But it was debutants Gujarat Titans who won the tournament, beating Rajasthan Royals by seven wickets in the final, making their maiden outing memorable.
The BCCI had earlier shortlisted Ahmedabad, Cuttack, Dharamshala, Guwahati, Indore and Lucknow as possible venues for two new teams. PSG Group and CVC Capital won the bids for teams from Ahmedabad and Lucknow.
RPSG shelled out Rs 7090 crore for the franchise they named Lucknow Super Giants while CVC paid Rs 5625 crore for the team they named Gujarat Titans.
The BCCI also allowed teams to retain a maximum of four players, with LSG and GT permitted to choose a maximum of three players before the auction, which was held on February 12 and 13 in Bengaluru.
Keeper-batter Ishan Kishan was the costliest player at the auction, who went for Rs 15.25 crore to Mumbai Indians while England's Liam Livingstone went to Punjab Kings for Rs 11.50 crore, becoming the costliest overseas player for that edition.
A total of 74 matches were played with each team playing 14 group stage games. For the 10-team format, the BCCI announced that teams were divided equally into two groups.
With teams of the same groups playing each other twice and facing teams of the other gropu once, in a similar format used in 2011.

Dream debut for Gujarat Titans
Gujarat Titans beat Rajasthan Royals by seven wickets in the final at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad to cap off a dream debut for the Hardik Pandya-led side.
Pandya led from the front, producing an impressive all-round performance as they chased down 131 runs to win despite losing keeper-opener Wriddhiman Saha’s wicket cheaply early on.
Prasidh Krishna dismissed Saha and Trent Boult applied even more pressure with a maiden over with the new ball. Matthew Wade and Shubman Gill tried to break the shackles as GT reached 31/2 after the powerplay overs as Pandya came in next.
At the halfway stage, Pandya and Gill took GT to 54/2, needing 77 off the final 10 overs. Pandya upped the ante before Yuzvendra Chahal dismissed him to break the partnership.
In walked David Miller as GT were placed at 97/3 and the South African ensured there were no more hiccups.
