Joe Root surpassed Sachin Tendulkar and Ricky Ponting to achieve major milestones during the first innings of the fifth Test against India. Root scored 29 before getting dismissed by a nip-backer from Mohammed Siraj.
New Delhi: England batter Joe Root has surpassed legendary batters Sachin Tendulkar and Ricky Ponting to achieve major milestones in the fifth Test match of the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy at the Kennington Oval in London on Friday, August 1.
Root has now overtaken Sachin Tendulkar in the list of most runs scored in home Test matches. He was just 22 runs away from breaking Tendulkar's record of 7216 runs at home, and did it in the second session of Day 2 with a boundary against Mohammed Siraj in the 33rd over
Root is in second place on the list, scoring 7220* runs in home Tests, while Ricky Ponting has scored 7578 runs in 92 Tests in Australia. He scored 29 runs in the fifth Test and was removed by Siraj. The pacer bowled a length delivery outside off, and it nipped back in sharply. Root couldn't get his bat down on time, and the ball hit him on the knee roll in front of the middle stump.
