Luke Wright to step down as Englands national selector after T20 World Cup
During his time with the English cricket team, the side had an underwhelming time especially in the big ICC events as well as bilateral fixtures.
New Delhi: England men's national selector Luke Wright is set to step down from his position after next month's T20 World Cup 2026, it was confirmed on Thursday. Wright, who is a former cricketer, was appointed to the post back in November 2022 and with little over three years into the role, he will quit the job, confirmed the England and Wales Cricket Board.
During his time with the English cricket team, the side had an underwhelming time especially in the big ICC events as well as bilateral fixtures. England failed to make to the World Test Championship final in 2023 and 2025, and also crashed out of the group stage in the ODI World Cup 2023 and the ICC Champions Trophy 2025.
England, though, managed to reach the semifinals of the T20 World Cup 2024 but were defeated by India, which eventually lifted the trophy for the second time. Wright citied time away from his family as the primary reason for resigning, not mentioning a word about the performances of England during his tenure.
Honour to serve England: Wright
'It has been a true honour and privilege to serve as an England Men's Selector over the past three years, said Wright. The role demands significant travel and time away from home and with a young family the time feels right to pass the baton on to the next person. I now look forward with real interest and enthusiasm to whatever cricketing roles the future may hold.'
Meanwhile, ECB men's managing director Rob Key expressed his gratitude for being a part of the side and also said that his contribution to England cricket has been exceptional.
'I have absolutely loved working with Luke. His contribution to English cricket has been exceptional and I trust his judgement as much as anyone. He has added so much more to this role than just being a selector,' said Key.
