England players dominated the run-scoring charts and bowling charts in the Champions Trophy 2004, but failed to inspire their team to the title.
West Indies won their maiden Champions Trophy title in 2004 after beating England in the final at the Oval in London. West Indies remained unbeaten throughout the tournament and rode on some impressive performances from their batters and bowlers to clinch the elusive trophy. The likes of Ramnaresh Sarwan, Chris Gayle and Ian Bradshaw, among others, starred in West Indies' title-winning campaign.
West Indies were part of Group B in the multi-nation tournament, which consisted of 12 teams in the 2004 edition. The Brian Lara-led side made a winning start to the tournament with a thumping 138-run victory against Bangladesh before thrashing South Africa by 5 wickets to make it two wins in a row and end the group stage unbeaten.
West Indies bowlers delivered as a unit as they hammered Pakistan by 7 wickets in the semi-final to storm into the final. Pacers Corey Collymore, Wavell Hinds and Dwayne Bravo did well as they picked up two wickets each to bundle out Pakistan cheaply for 131 runs in the semi-final. West Indies rode on Sarwan's unbeaten 56 and skipper Brian Lara's 31 to comfortably chase down the target and qualify for the final.
West Indies pulled off a thrilling 2-wicket victory in the final against England with the help of all-round heroics from Bradshaw to clinch the trophy. Bradshaw took 2 wickets with the ball to help West Indies skittle out England for 217 runs before playing a valiant 34-run knock to take his team home in the tricky chase. Marcus Trescothick slammed a brilliant knock of 104 runs for England in the final, but his knock went in vain.
