After the Men in Blue lost the wickets of skipper Shubman Gill and star batter Virat Kohli early in the innings, Rohit stood up for the visiting side scoring 73 sensible runs which gave India the perfect start.
The former captain failed to convert his fifty into a big score but he played an impactful knock announcing that he is here to stay and has not lost the touch. The Mumbai batter smashed seven fours and two sixes in his innings which was praised by his teammates and the crowd present at the Adelaide Oval.
Meanwhile Rohit who scripted multiple records in the second ODI match is set to achieve a big ODI milestone in the series finale at Sydney which is a potential dead rubber.
Most sixes in ODI history
Rohit Sharma, who is known for his big hits, is on the cusp of achieving a big record in the third ODI match against Australia in Sydney on Saturday. Rohit has currently hit 346 maximums in the 50-over format and remains 5 sixes away from Shahid Afridi's record of most sixes in the history of ODIs. The former Pakistan batter, with 351 sixes, leads the elite list of the record.
If Rohit hits 6 sixes in the Sydney ODI, he will surpass the record and take the top spot and with 5 maximums, he will match Afridi. The senior Indian batter played a careful knock in the second match at Adelaide but still managed to smash two sixes in the game. The right-handed batter has a flawless record at the SCG and as far as the big hits are concerned, he has hit a lot of them at the venue.
Meanwhile, with the 73-run knock in Adelaide, Rohit got into the 1400s as far as his run-scoring was concerned in ODIs in Australia. The 38-year-old now has an opportunity to break the India record for most runs by a player from the country in the format in Australia. Rohit (1,409) is 82 runs behind the Master Blaster Sachin Tendulkar (1,491) and if he scores 82 runs in the Sydney ODI, he will script a record.
In the second ODI, Rohit became the third-highest run-scorer for India in the format surpassing Sourav Ganguly.
