Team India star Shreyas Iyer is on the cusp of breaking the record for being the fastest Indian batter to 3,000 runs in ODIs. The record for India is currently held by former opener Shikhar Dhawan, who achieved the feat in 72 innings. Iyer has a chance to break Dhawan's record in the upcoming 2nd ODI against New Zealand on Wednesday, January 14.2nd ODI against New Zealand

Iyer made his comeback for India in the ODI series opener against New Zealand in Vadodara on Sunday, January 11, after recovering from a spleen injury which he sustained in Australia in October last year. The right-hander played a fine knock of 49 runs off 47 balls to play his part in India's thrilling 4-wicket win in the game.

Though Virat Kohli stole the show with his brilliant 93 during India's 301-run chase in the game, Iyer too looked in splendid touch and batted exceptionally well. The Indian vice-captain added 77 runs for the third wicket with Kohli. Iyer will be looking to continue his fine form in the 2nd ODI against the Kiwis as he eyes a major record.

Shreyas Iyer on the verge of surpassing Kohli, Dhawan

Iyer is on the verge of surpassing Kohli and Dhawan to become the fastest Indian batter to complete 3,000 ODI runs in the 2nd ODI against New Zealand in Rajkot on Wednesday. Iyer has 2966 runs to his name in 68 innings for India in ODIs so far and needs only 34 runs to complete 3,000 runs in the format.

If he manages to achieve the feat in the 2nd ODI against New Zealand on Wednesday, Iyer will become the quickest Indian batter to complete 3,000 runs, having achieved the milestone in 69 innings. Dhawan currently holds the record for being the fastest Indian batter to 3,000 ODI runs, having taken 72 innings to reach the milestone.

Kohli is in the second spot, having reached the milestone of 3,000 ODI runs in 75 innings for India. He is followed by KL Rahul in the third spot, who completed 3,000 runs for India in ODIs in 78 innings.

Virat Kohli - 75 innings

KL Rahul - 78 innings

If Iyer manages to complete 3,000 runs in the 2nd ODI against New Zealand on Wednesday, he will also equal West Indies legend Viv Richards record for being the fourth-fastest to the milestone. Richards completed 3,000 runs in 69 innings in his ODI career. Former South Africa batter Hashim Amla holds the record for being the fastest batter overall to reach 3,000 ODI runs in just 57 innings.
