Who is Devendra Bora? Uttarakhand pacer who shot to fame with prized wicket of Rohit Sharma
Vijay Hazare Trophy 2024-25: Uttarakhand fast bowler Devendra Bora played a spoilsport by dismissing Rohit Sharma for a golden duck, leaving the fans in Jaipur distraught.
New Delhi: For the second time in three days, fans in Jaipur flocked to the Sawai Mansingh Stadium, anticipating another blockbuster performance by India superstar Rohit Sharma.
The former India skipper mesmerised the Jaipur fans on Wednesday with a masterful century against Sikkim in a Vijay Hazare Trophy 2024-25 opening round match, and spectators thronged the stadium on Friday expecting a repeat dose of entertainment. However, Rohit failed to replicate his sensational knock as Uttarakhand pacer Devendra Bora played a spoilsport to leave the fans distraught.
Coming into the contest on the back of solid form, Rohit was expected to set the stage on fire again in Mumbai's second round fixture against Uttarakhand. But Bora had other ideas.
Bora gets the big fish
Playing just his third List-A match, the 25-year-old shot to fame with the prized wicket of batting legend Rohit. The 38-year-old was dismissed for a golden duck in the first over of the contest after Uttarakhand opted to bowl. The Indian icon perished while trying to play his favourite pick-up pull shot; however, the stroke that has yielded countless runs for him led to his downfall on Friday.
Rohit was unable to time the ball perfectly and was caught at deep square leg by Jagmohan Nagarkoti. His dismissal sparked wild celebrations in the Uttarakhand dugout.
Having seen their favourite batting star score 155 in the previous fixture against Sikkim, fans were left in shock after watching Rohit walk back to the pavillion within minutes of the game's beginning.
Know all about Devendra Bora
Bora came into the match with just two List-A games in his kitty. But his talent trumped his inexperience. He came into the match against Mumbai on the back of a superb four-wicket haul against Himachal Pradesh in the first-round match on Wednesday. The speedster backed up his display with a three-wicket haul against Mumbai.
Despite his bowling heroics, Mumbai posted a formidable 331 for 7 courtesy of half-centuries from brothers Sarfaraz and Musheer Khan and a magnificent 93-run knock by wicket-keeper Hardik Tamore.
Besides the three List A matches, Bora has also played 15 First-Class matches for Uttarakhand and has bagged 30 wickets. His best figures in FC cricket (6/79) came against Bengal in the Ranji Trophy in October of this year.
Bora, who turned 25 earlier this month, made headlines in the Uttarakhand Premier League. Playing for Dehradun Warriors, he returned with 10 wickets in just six matches. His outstanding display helped him earn a spot in the Uttarakhand playing XI for domestic cricket.
