Womens ODI World Cup 2025: Australia vs Sri Lanka match abandoned after relentless rain
Australia and Sri Lanka women's clash was called off due to relentless rain at the R. Premadasa Stadium in Colombo on Saturday, October 4.
New Delhi: After several hours of waiting, the game between Sri Lanka and Australia was called off due to persistent rain at the R. Premadasa Stadium in Colombo on Saturday, October 4. Both sides will get a point each, and the hosts will be more pleased with sharing a point against the mighty Australians.
The drizzle started before the match time, and the entire field was covered. The rain stopped 20 minutes into the game, and covers were taken off. Both on-field umpires came out in the middle for an inspection, but the ground wasn't in playing condition at that time.
After that, the rain halted again, with dark clouds hovering over the stadium. With the rain getting heavier every hour, umpires took the call to call off the match at 5:34 pm IST. The cut-off time was 8:08 pm IST, but the persistent rain had the last laugh, and both teams got a point each.
Australia are still in the top position in the points table with three points in two matches, whereas after losing against India, Sri Lanka opened their account in the ongoing ODI World Cup and are now placed in the fifth spot with one point in two matches.
India and Pakistan's high-octane clash will also take place at the same venue on Sunday, October 5, and fans will be hopeful to watch some action between arch-rivals.
Will 'no handshake' policy continue in India vs Pakistan women's game
India and Pakistan's rivalry moved to its peak when the Indian side refused to shake hands with Pakistan in the Asia Cup 2025 and shut the dressing room door after the game. The arch-rivals met thrice in the Continental Cup, and not a single time did players engage with each other and refuse to shake hands at the toss and after the match.
According to reports, BCCI also advised the Indian women's team to continue the 'no handshake' policy with the Pakistan team in the ODI World Cup 2025. Both teams will clash at the R. Premadasa Stadium on Sunday, October 5, in the group stage game.
