Bruno Fernandes bagged a double as Manchester United hammered Wolves 4-1 in the Premier League at the Molineux Stadium on Wednesday to move to the sixth spot in the points table. United returned to winning ways against winless Wolves, who continue to reel at the bottom of the table after suffering an eighth straight defeat this season.
Ahead of kick-off at home, Wolves fans staged a protest outside the Molineux Stadium, calling out the Chinese ownership of the club amid their terrible run in the Premier League this season. The team's lackluster continued on the field as United took the led through Fernandes in the 25th minute.
United had plenty of chances to double their lead in the first half, however, the visitors failed to convert them. Much to the delight of Wolves supporters, Jean-Ricner Bellegarde ended the club's 540-minute wait for a Premier League goal during the injury time in the first half.
He slotted the ball into the corner after a mis-hit from David Moller Wolfe landed in his way. The equaliser meant the two teams headed into the break with nothing to separate them. However, United returned with vigour in the second half and restored their lead in the 51st minute when Bryan Mbeumo finished a counter attack started by Luke Shaw.
Mason Mount made it 3-1 for United in the 62nd minute, when he brilliantly controlled a chipped pass from Fernandes and slotted the ball past the Wolves keeper. It was a silky finish from the midfielder, who has been returning to his scoring form at United.
Fernandes sealed an emphatic 4-1 victory for Amorim's men by converting a penalty in the 82nd minute, following a hand ball from Yerson Mosquera. United scored four goals against Wolves to record their biggest win of the season, piling more misery on Wolves.
Manchester United's 4-1 victory against Wolves was a much-needed one for manager Ruben Amorim, who would have breathed a sigh of relief after his side's stupendous performance in the second half at the Molineux. It could have turned out to be another embarrassing situation for Amorim had United failed to produce a response after Wolves equalised before the break.
It was a crucial win for United and will ease the pressure on Portuguese, who has been facing intense criticism from all corners for his side's inconsistencies in the ongoing season. United have failed to put together a string of good performances so far this year and continue to tumble after good results here and there.
