New Delhi: Crystal Palace have officially announced the signing of striker Brennan Johnson from Tottenham Hotspur on December 2. The Eagles have reportedly paid a fee of £35 million to Spurs to secure his services. According to reports, Johnson took some time to decide on his future, as AFC Bournemouth were also an option, who were looking to replace Antoine Semenyo.
However, the conversations between the striker and Palace manager Oliver Glasner were positive as he joins the South London side on a four-year contract after two-and-a-half seasons with Spurs. He will wear the No. 11 jersey for the Eagles.
The Palace boss has been keen to strengthen his squad after a demanding campaign in European football, and has also criticised the club's lack of preparedness in the previous transfer window. However, the Austrian manager has been delighted with the signing of Johnson and credited the club for wrapping the deal early in the window.
"Brennan will give us options in our attacking play with his pace and goalscoring ability and with all the upcoming games he will be a valuable addition to the squad," Glasner added.
Crystal Palace have been keeping a track of the former Nottingham Forest player for quite some time and agreed a deal with Spurs on Tuesday, which surpasses the fee paid by the Eagles to buy Christian Benteke from Liverpool in August 2016.
It is understood that Johnson, who has started only six times in the Premier League under Thomas Frank, had struggled for gametime, was keen to stay in London. Johnson, who scored the winning goal for the Spurs in the Europa League final against Manchester United last May, said he's really excited and happy to join such a great club.
"It's a great time for me to be here and join the journey that this club is on – I'm super excited," Johnson said.
Tottenham are expected to sign a replacement in the January transfer window, with Manchester City’s Savinho and Yan Diomande of RB Leipzig being their reported targets.
